This is an experience I shall always feel emotional about. I often think back to that day and wonder how that child is today.
Although this happened to me over thirty years ago, I will never forget the face of this sweet child.
One day a while ago, filling my tank with gas,
A young boy smiled and came up to me.
He breathlessly asked for a lift to his house,
Because he was late for his tea.
I told him how dangerous this could have been
To go on a ride with a stranger.
The boy said he was looking for a kind face,
And felt he was not in danger.
I told him his parents would prefer he was late,
Than for him not to turn up at all.
He agreed in the future, he’d think of my words,
As I left the gate he grinned, “Thanks!” he called.
Brought tears to my eyes, he was about nine.
I feared for his future welfare.
He seemed a tough kid, but if he’d been mine,
I’d have taught him to be more aware.
Through life he’ll meet bad, sprinkled with good.
His innocence, I hoped would stay.
Saying a quick prayer, I asked if he could,
Be guarded by Angels, as he went on his way.
